First trimester
Weeks 4–13The first trimester is when the biggest changes often happen out of sight. The week pages in this section walk you through your baby’s earliest development steps, what is happening in your body, and the symptoms that are common in these early weeks.

Week 4
Size of a poppy seed
Your baby, now an embryo, is about 1-2 mm long, roughly the size of a poppy seed. It's growing quickly inside your uterus.

Size of a sesame seed or orange seed
This week your embryo is about 2 mm long, roughly the size of a sesame seed. It may look a little like a tadpole, with a primitive head structure and a small, tail-like protrusion. This is a very important week, when the foundations of the organ systems are being laid.

Size of a pea
Your baby, or embryo, is about 6 mm long, roughly the size and shape of a pea. With a curved back and a little tail, some people think it looks like a tiny tadpole.

Size of a blueberry
Your baby, or embryo, is now about half a centimeter long (roughly 10 mm from crown to rump); about the size of a blueberry. Your baby has grown remarkably fast compared to just a month ago.

Your baby, now called a fetus, is about 1.6 cm long from crown to rump and weighs roughly 1 gram, about the size of a raspberry. Your little one will double in size by next week!

Your baby, or fetus, is about 37.6 cm long from head to heel and weighs around 1.2 kilograms — roughly the size of an eggplant.

Your baby, or fetus, is about 38.6 cm long from head to heel and weighs around 1.4 kilos, roughly the size of a pumpkin. They're now largely formed and will keep maturing their organs and putting on fat over the next few weeks.

Your baby, or fetus, is about 39.9 cm long from head to heel and weighs roughly 1.6 kilos, about the size of a head of cabbage. Over the next seven weeks or so, you can expect your baby to gain around a quarter of a kilo each week.

Your baby, or fetus, is now about 47.4 cm long and weighs roughly 2.8 kilograms, about the size of a head of lettuce. Growth may slow over the coming weeks, which lets your baby keep storing the energy needed for birth while also getting ready to pass through the narrow birth canal.
